My Creative Space

Do you ever have one of those weeks where your seam ripper is your best friend? That's how my week has been in the sewing department. There were shorts made and ripped out more times than I want to count, unsuccessful underwear making, and experimental free motion quilting. This all adds up to a couple dents in the old ego. Luckily, I have a very supportive husband who encourages me to keep going, keep learning and keep trying.
Some much needed quilting practice.
I "tried" to make some underwear for my overly skinny son. If anyone knows of a boys underwear pattern please let me know. The vintage girls one did not do the trick.

Please check out kootoyoo for some more great creative spaces!

Gift

I have a new friend I've really enjoyed getting to know and we were planning on getting together today. Because she's a crocheter I whipped up this crochet pouch with a beautiful ball of Malabrigo yarn. Unfortunately her daughter has chicken pox and so the date has been moved. I was tempted to expose my son so he could get the immunity but it went against my mothering extinct to purposefully expose him to itching spots. So we've postponed for another day and I'm thinking of making a few more of these for the shop.

Breakfast

It's a good thing I worked out this morning since when the kids woke up a request for waffles was made. I know that waffles can just have syrup but what's the fun in that?
The rest of the day just got better with a trip to the local museum where my former history teacher self went into full force. The oldest was mildly interested in what I had to say, or faked it, and the other two enjoyed the interactive displays.
It's days like these that make me thankful I'm at home.

A Winner and A New Shop

We have a winner..... Edward and Lilly who said... I'm a huge fan of lavender and those sachets are lovely. Good luck with your bathroom overhaul!
Congratulations Rebecca!

Thank you all for commenting. I will email you and then pass along your info. so you can receive your lovely sachets! I really enjoyed reading all of your comments. I love comments.

Also in other news I finally got around to updating the new shop. It's called Vireo Vintage, sticking with the bird theme, and carries all things vintage. I just love going to estate sales, but I do not have a big enough house to keep all I find, thus the shop. Please go browse around, there will be more coming shortly.

And if you're one of those google readers I changed my blog layout so click on over and tell me what you think!

Happy Monday, I'm hoping for some real spring weather after snowy weekend. Ugh, I'm soooo ready for spring.

So Sweet...

My oldest has been begging to sew this week, which is of course the week my sewing room has been a disaster in an effort to organize myself. So when I finally could see the floor she took her sewing box and fabric and began to create. There was a few moments where I feigned busyness and watched her focus on her creation. For a five year old I'm pretty impressed with what she comes up with. Right now there's not much teaching about the ins and outs of sewing, just her, fabric and her machine. A mother couldn't ask for anything more.

My Creative Space

Fair warning: This post is a little pic heavy. I got a little excited about my freshly organized space. My sewing room was in desperate need of a little spring cleaning so when I saw a spring cleaning list on Sew, Mama, Sew I decided it was time. I bought a bunch of bins and organized away and I'd have to say I love how it turned out. The bins keep the fabric more organized and I can still see all the variations. No more piles of loose fabric for me!I bought the doll at a garage sale with the vintage dress and although I've never catorgorized myself as a doll person she fits in perfectly on my shelf. It's nice to finally have my yarn and supplies organized in a way that is actually usable. I'm in love with bins! I was also able to work on my son's quilt this week. I love the Arcadia fabric by Sanae for Moda. I'm using the jelly filled quilt pattern from ThimbleBlossoms. This is my first time buying a jelly roll for a quilt and I'd have to say I love how simple it is. It's really coming together nicely and I'm excited for the final product.
Thanks for patiently viewing my numerous photos! Can you tell I'm just a tad excited?

Vintage Books

The first nice spring weekend we've had in awhile and my poor husband spent it curled up in bed with the flu! I in the mean time tried to entertain three children and keep them from bothering their father. I am utterly exhausted and it looks like a tornado went through my house. So I'm briefly sharing some fabulous pages out of some vintage books I got at the local library book sale. The books were super old and super beat up but the pictures are gorgeous and I have some plans for those illustrations soon; after cleaning up the tornado and taking care of a sick husband. Germs be gone from my house! Seriously, I can only take so much....

My Creative Space

All kinds of beads and accessories have taken over my space. I've been playing around with making my own stitch markers for knitting and I finally got up enough courage to bring them into my local knitting store. I have sold some of my knitting needle organizers to her before but I am always nervous when showing a new product. Thankfully she loved them and are now for sale in her store. Now I just need to make some for my etsy shop. And can I just say how much I love my stamp! I love craftpudding!

Please head on over to kootoyoo for other great creative spaces.

Birthday Present

My sisters birthday was on Easter this year and my parents went to visit her and brought my gift with them. Since she's at the end of her PhD in entomology I knew she didn't have as much time to as she would like but I thought this neat pincushion/bucket would be something she could use if she found a few moments to sit and quilt. I mean everyone needs a break now and then! I got the pattern from this great tutorial and I absolutely love it. If you're in my inner circle expect one shortly! It really was an easy pattern to follow and turned out great. The only thing is my pincushion wasn't quite even and I'm what I did wrong, maybe I filled my weighted bag too full. Who knows? But all in all it turned out well and the sister reported she liked it. Success!

Sweet Giveaway by Tollipop

I just found this great giveaway from tollip. She's giving away three lovely prints. I'm crossing my fingers that I may be lucky! I'm not holding my breath though since I never seem to be able to actually win anything. I'm just not one of those people.
I hope that you all had a great Easter. Mine was filled with the kids suffering from the stomach bug, coughing, screaming and general chaos. I didn't even have the benefit of dealing with said chaos in the comfort of my own home since we went to Colorado to visit family. To say I'm happy to be home and starting to recover is an understatement.
But things are looking on the upside now that I think spring is finally in full bloom, the illnesses have been vanquished and I have sewing plans in the works. Thank goodness for small reprieves.

Midnight and an Egg

What do you do when your daughter is still wide awake at midnight because you let her take a four hour nap? You take her to the sewing room of course for a little egg sewing, with this great tutorial and a little egg nesting. Nothing says good mothering like sewing with your child in the middle of the night.

My Creative Space

I think I may have finally kicked my cold from my system, cross your fingers. I now have generously shared it with my kiddos so they're all curled up on the couch resting. Since I haven't been feeling great my long to do list barely got touched but there was knitting of a hat (yes, I know it's spring) and the beginnings of a felted purse.I made it into my sewing room briefly to play with old vintage blocks and scraps discovered at an estate sale. My mind is a whir with what to create.Check out more beautiful creative spaces at kootoyoo.

Goslings

The girls got to bring home baby goslings from preschool yesterday to take care of for a night. They were amazingly cute and perfect for right before Easter. They had a hard time saying goodbye this morning.I'm still struggling with a cold and planning on snuggling up on the couch with the kiddos and some movies today. I'm hoping I can kick it fast so that I can get back on track as my list seems to be getting longer and longer.

Cold

I'm fighting a bit of a cold today. Luckily, it's just me and the son this morning so we've been enjoying a lot of book reading and cuddle time. Of course now he's in destruction mode going through the pile of paper recyclables. But he's quiet and happy. I'm not complaining. While we were in Disneyland I had these done of the kids. I've always wanted a silhouette of all of them and I'm so glad I got it done and captured them as small children. I need to actually hang them on the wall sometime soon but for now they make a cute group of three on the buffet.
The middle child, the far left, and I had an interesting conversation the other day that went something like this..
Me: You need to help pick up the dishes please.
Jay: I can't I'm too tired.
Me: Well if you're too tired you need to go to bed and miss out on the family movie.
Jay: I'm not two tired, I'm just one tired.
Me: So you can pick up now?
Jay: Yes, I'm only one tired!

I think all things should be determined in numbers of tiredness. I'm two tired to do the laundry...I'm only one tired so I can vacuum, etc. A pretty good system if you ask me. She always has the most random thoughts and ideas to share!

Refurbished Bench

Before

AfterI bought this bench for my girls vanity almost a year ago at a second hand store. It only cost me five bucks and I figured I could redo it. I finally got around to tackling it and it turned out fairly well. I learned a few things in the process for sure. I learned that trying to upholster something by yourself guarantees that the fabric won't be as tight as it should be. I also learned that I needed to cut the foam and fabric a little more exact to prevent bunching.
But for my first attempt I'm pretty happy. And since it's in a little girls room right now I figure I'll probably be reupholstering it in the future anyway. It was a good first lesson.

On a side note: This morning I left the my son and daughter in the kitchen to eat cereal while I settled on the couch with a cup of coffee and a magazine. I heard them laughing and giggling and thought, "Ah, how sweet". Soon however I heard splashing, and as you can guess splashing should not be occurring in the kitchen. I walk in to find that my son has dumped the contents of his bowl on the table and is beating it with his hand as his sister laughs hysterically. To say the least there were milk splatters everywhere, especially on the culprits! My son has discovered the tried and true rule of a toddler, "Who needs to eat when you can make a mess."

Shop Update

I finally got around to posting a few things in the shop today. I sewed these knitting needle organizers a little bit ago. I'd cut out the pattern before Christmas so it was nice to get them crossed off the list!
